Department Of Pharmacology

Pharmacology (Greek; pharmacon – drug, logos – study) It is the science dealing with study of all the aspects of drugs. Department of pharmacology is mainly concerned in rooting knowledge of drugs and research in undergraduate students. Department has well experienced and excellent faculties in teaching and research (preclinical and clinical). Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring centre, under National Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) is also functioning in the Department. Human and Animal ethics committees are the two pillars of our department in conducting various research activities for the faculties and students.

ACADEMICS

MBBS – Teaching the basic clinical application aspects of drugs as per CBME curriculum, importance of Ethics in research promoting good prescribing skills and GCP.

ACADEMICS

  • Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology lab

  • CNS lab – Facilities for Evaluation of Analgesics, Antidepressants, Antianxiety and Antiepileptic drugs
  • Museum – Various scientists in Drug discovery, Drugs, Models and charts
  • Departmental Library –Recent and advanced reading facilities & National and International Journals.

INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL ETHICS COMMITTEE

Animal Ethics Committee (AECs) provides avenues for the students and faculty participation in the regulation of animal research.Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) of GMC &ESI Hospital, Coimbatore is registered with ‘Committee for Control and Supervision of  Experiments on Animals’ (CCSEA),Animal welfare division and Government of India for research and education purpose vide registration no. (1981/GO/Re/S/17/CPCSEA).

IAEC has been constituted to supervise and evaluate all aspects of the animal care and use program in holding and experiment on Animals (Control and Supervision) rules 1998; with a goal to perform scientific research involving experiments on animals ensuring ethical use of animals so that they are not subjected to unnecessary pain and sufferings.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To facilitate legitimate scientific research involving experiments on animals.
  2. Ensuring the ethical & minimal use of animals
  3. To ensure that animals are not subjected to unnecessary pain and suffering during experiments.

FUNCTIONS

The functions of IAEC are as follows:

  1. It approves research involving animals which confirm the various guidelines for use of animals in research.
  2. Reviews proposed use of animals in research and require any modifications necessary for approval or withhold approval prior to use ofanimals.
  3. Reviews and investigates legitimate concerns involving the care and use of animals during research.
  4. Reviews periodically the Institute’s animal facility.
  5. Ensures that all personnel involved in animal care and use are appropriately qualified to carry out the proposed activities.

PHARMACOVIGILANCE

Pharmacovigilance is the science where the activities are related to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug related problems. The information generated by Pharmacovigilance is useful in educating health care professionals about adverse drug reactions (ADR) and in the official regulations of drug use so as to reduce the risk of drug related harm to the patients.

The Pharmacovigilance Committee of our College is actively involved in the National Pharmacovigilance Programme of  India. Activities involved in Pharmacovigilance are collection, communication and dissemination of ADR data linking with the Clinicians to provide expertise for assessing causality and severity of ADRs by using Naranjo algorithm and WHO scales.

The ADR data’s are entered in Suspected Adverse Drug reaction Reporting Form. Since we are ADR monitoring centre (AMC) according to Pharmacovigilance programme of  India, our college Causality assessment committee will assess the causality and upload to Vigiflow for further action. This makes changes in the labelling of medicines indicating restrictions in use or statuary warnings, precautions or even withdrawal of the drug by the regulatory decision making authority.
